‘On either side the river lie
Long fields of barley and of rye,
That clothe the wold and meet the sky………’

So wrote the Lincolnshire born Alfred Lord Tennyson who went to grammar school some 25 miles away. Did he ever visit Brigg, was Brigg the inspiration for his Camelot? Certainly it is a Camelot for any of you that enjoy your food and drink!

Surrounded by productive farmland, we have excellent restaurants, take aways and food shops.

Among the many fine restaurants there is something for all tastes. We have those serving traditional fare and not-so-traditional fare, including an NFU Award Winner, Chinese restaurants as fine as any you can find in New World China Towns, Indian restaurants serving food fit for a Moghul Emporer and a fish restaurant! And as ambience is nearly as important as the food, choose from a friendly pub atmosphere, comfy teashops, dine by intimate candlelight in barns or in traditional no fuss restaurants. We have Italian, Greek and American style eateries. And let’s not forget all our Fish and Chip shops – after all Grimsby is not far away. Ethnic take away restaurants are also well represented.

There are many places in Brigg and in the surrounding villages where you can purchase fresh local produce to make your own supper. We even have one of Rick Stein’s food heroes, and another National Award winner. Fancy a picnic – no problem, a local food retailer will make you up a hamper. Many of our producers belong to the renowned ‘Taste of Lincolnshire’ Organisation, and many have attractions and/or tea shops associated with their shop, good places to while away a couple of hours with or without the kids. We are spoilt for choice for ‘proper’ butchers, don’t forget the local pickles to go with your cold cuts. Take home some locally roasted coffee – fresh coffee takes on a new meaning.

Now onto the drink. I have just counted up 13 pubs in Brigg itself (3 more having closed their doors for good) and village pubs can be found in Wrawby, Barnetby, Grasby, North Kelsey, Bonby, Broughton, Scawby, Scawby Brook, Hibaldstow, and Redbourne . We have pubs that serve marvellous food, pubs with beer gardens, pubs with entertainment and pubs that are just - well- pubs – for those serious afficianados of beer. We have nationally known brands of beer and we have our own local brewery. Their beer is served in many local pubs.

Having so much choice in such a small area, Brigg has to be the perfect place for a good old pub crawl – but please - either organise a taxi or nominate a driver to stay sober.

As Tennyson wrote in The Northern Farmer

‘What atta stannin’ theer for, an’ doesn bring ma the yaale?’
or for those of you that don’t understand Lincolnshire dialect –‘what are you standing there for, GET THE BEERS IN’
